Amethyst is associated with peace, stability, and courage. It has been used by many cultures as a protective stone. Leonardo da Vinci said this stone helped protect him from evil thoughts. For the ancient Greeks and Romans, they believed Amethysts could protect them from being drunk and keep them clear-headed and quick-witted. Additionally, the color purple has long been associated with royalty, and therefore, the Amethyst is the perfect stone used by British, Russian, and Egyptian royals.
